Tulsa Land Surveyor Survey Referral Network (918) 000-0000
Referral service. We are not a surveying firm and do not perform survey work. We connect Oklahoma property owners with independently licensed professional land surveyors.

Background

How surveyors get licensed here

Land surveying is a licensed profession in every state. Here is what that means in Oklahoma and how to check.

Anyone can call themselves a handyman. Nobody can lawfully call themselves a professional land surveyor without a license. Surveying sits alongside engineering and architecture as a regulated profession, because the work produces legal documents that affect property rights.

What the license requires

Licensure in Oklahoma is administered by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The path involves a combination of education and supervised experience, plus a sequence of examinations: the NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying exam, the NCEES Principles and Practice of Surveying exam, and a state specific examination covering Oklahoma law and surveying practice.

That last one matters more than people realise. Boundary law is state law, and a surveyor licensed elsewhere is not automatically qualified to resolve an Oklahoma boundary.

Firms need their own authorization

An individual license is not the whole picture. Under Oklahoma statute, a firm that practices or offers to practice land surveying must hold a certificate of authorization from the Board, with a licensed professional designated in responsible charge. So there are two things worth verifying: the individual surveyor’s license, and the firm’s authorization.

Ask for the license number and check it. Any legitimate surveyor will give it to you without hesitation, and the Board maintains public records. This advice applies to anyone you hire, including anyone we refer you to.

The seal

A completed survey carries the surveyor’s seal and signature. That is not decoration. It is a professional attestation that the work was performed under their responsible charge and meets applicable standards, and it carries real liability. An unsealed drawing is not a survey, whatever it looks like.

Continuing education

Licensed professionals carry ongoing continuing education obligations to maintain licensure. Standards change, technology changes, and case law affecting boundary determination develops over time.

What to ask before you hire

  • What is your Oklahoma PLS license number?
  • Does your firm hold a certificate of authorization?
  • Do you regularly work in this county?
  • Do you carry professional liability insurance?
  • Will the survey be sealed, and what deliverables are included?
  • If the result is challenged, what does your firm do?

None of those are rude questions. They are the questions a careful client asks, and a good surveyor will be glad you asked them.

Why we say this so often

We are a referral service, not a surveying firm, and we hold no license ourselves. That is explained in full here. The surveyor you work with holds the license, does the work, and stands behind it. Verifying them is entirely reasonable and we would rather you did.
